Software Engineering Internship

Ship a real feature into a real codebase.

Build a production-style feature end to end: from a product spec, through a pull request with tests, to a reviewed merge. You work on a real starter repo, get a mentor-reviewed PR, and leave with shipped work for your portfolio.

The real brief

What you will actually work on

No generic prompts. You are matched to a real registered firm and work on their brief.

Brief: "Add a CSV upload + validation flow to the dashboard. Users should be able to upload a file of up to 5,000 rows, see row-level validation errors, and download a cleaned file." You implement against a starter Next.js repo with an existing test setup. Mentor reviews your PR against the rubric. Approved PRs get merged into our demo org and linked on your certificate.

This is an example brief in Software Engineering. The exact brief and the firm name are shared with you once you apply and pay. We work with a small set of real registered Indian firms and match you to the right one for your role.

Who this is for

Engineering students in their 2nd-4th year who can write basic code in JavaScript or Python but have never shipped to a real codebase with tests and review.

What you will do

You get a working starter app, a one-page product spec, and a monthly timeline. You implement the feature, write tests, open a pull request, and respond to review feedback until your PR is approved.

FAQ

Software Engineering internship questions

Do I need prior internship experience?

No. You need to be comfortable writing basic JavaScript or Python. We give you a working repo and a clear spec.

What if my PR is not approved?

You get up to two rounds of review feedback. If it still does not meet the bar, you receive a detailed feedback report and a completion-of-participation record, not the certificate.

Is the certificate verified?

Yes. Every certificate has a unique ID and a public verification URL at firstshift.in/certificate/[id].
